Not less than seven Bangladeshi migrants who have been on a ship from Libya heading for the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa have died of hypothermia, Agrigento Prosecutor Luigi Patronaggio stated in an announcement on Tuesday.
The coastguard noticed the boat in a single day some 18 miles (29 kilometers) off the coast of Lampione, an uninhabited island close to Lampedusa, and rescue operations have been performed, the prosecutor stated. Lampedusa Mayor Salvatore Martello confirmed the loss of life toll, including the vessel was carrying 280 migrants, primarily from Bangladesh and Egypt.
