The country does not need either a patriarchal or matriarchal system, but rather a humane and inclusive society free from discrimination, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said today (28 January).
“We do not want matriarchy, nor do we want patriarchy. We want a humanitarian society built on harmony between both,” he said while addressing a Jamaat women’s rally in the capital’s Mirpur area as the chief guest.
Shafiqur said Jamaat does not believe in division or exclusion of any kind, stressing unity across religion, ethnicity and gender. “We do not want conflict or division – whether based on religion, race or gender. We do not want discrimination in any form,” he added.
Referring to the upcoming referendum, the Jamaat chief said voters would cast two ballots on the 12 February, urging people to support the “Yes” vote.
“A ‘Yes’ vote means victory for Bangladesh. It means freedom and ensures that fascism and oppression do not return,” he said, expressing confidence that Jamaat’s first vote would be in favour of the referendum.
He also referenced political developments following 5 August 2024, saying that public conduct and political sincerity since that date have made it clear who can be trusted. “From that day onward, people can see who stands for integrity through their actions, behaviour and values. The vote on the 12th will go to those we can place our trust in.”
