The Chittagong University (CU) authorities have temporarily suspended an official and six employees on charges of breaching discipline, corruption, and irregularities.
The decision was made at the 559th Syndicate meeting last Friday (1 August). But the matter came to light today (6 August) when CU Acting Registrar Prof Mohammad Saiful Islam confirmed it to the media.
The suspended individuals include the university’s security chief and deputy registrar, Golam Kibria, who is accused of taking a large bribe from a contractor to award him work.
He was suspended as the allegations against him were proven in the initial investigation. In addition, a separate committee has been formed to take final disciplinary action against Kibria.
The other six suspended employees are Tanvir Ahmed, a low-level assistant in the Accounting Department; Sayan Dasgupta, a low-level assistant in the Physical Education and Sports Science; Parvez Hasan, a low-level assistant in the teachers’ personal records department; Mahfuzur Rahman, a high-level assistant at the Comptroller of Accounts Office, and Central Store employees Ujjwal Hawlader and Abdul Mannan.
The allegations against them include locking the university’s registrar building, keeping the registrar confined, and creating a hostile environment in the office.
Prof Saiful said a committee was formed to investigate all these allegations against the employees who violated discipline and misbehaved at the registrar’s office last year. The Syndicate has decided to suspend them based on its findings, he added.
